The IELTS Test Format

writing

The listening section is divided into four parts, with a variety of audio recordings. You will listen to conversations and monologues on various topics. Afterward, you answer a set of questions based on the information you've heard. The difficulty level increases gradually throughout this section.

reading

The reading section also has three parts, featuring a range of texts, including articles, advertisements, and academic papers. You are required to answer questions that assess your understanding of the text, including comprehension, main ideas, and specific details.

writing

The writing section comprises two tasks. In Task 1, for the Academic version, you describe visual information, such as charts, graphs, or diagrams. For the General Training version, you write a letter based on a given situation. In Task 2, you write an essay in response to a prompt, expressing and supporting your opinion on a particular topic.

speaking

The speaking section consists of a face-to-face interview with an examiner. It is divided into three parts. In Part 1, you introduce yourself and answer questions about familiar topics. In Part 2, you receive a topic card and have one minute to prepare a speech before speaking for up to two minutes. In Part 3, you engage in a discussion with the examiner about abstract ideas and issues related to the topic introduced in Part 2.
